Live on World Radio Day 2025, celebrated on the 13th February, I examined radio's evolution in the digital era. I wanted to observe and understand how people's listening habits are changing as streaming, podcasting and online stations are growing in personality. By doing this, I wanted to see what this meant for radio's future.
Summary of the Live Report
My live report focused on three key elements: the shift from analog to digital, how audiences view streaming against traditional radio, and the future of radio. These elements were centered around me engaging with radio in all its formats, as well as using key takeaways from interviewing the public.
By focusing on these elements, my report highlighted that radio is not as irrelevant as many think it is in the digital age. The interviews I conducted tackled the topic from the opposite ends of the spectrum. The younger interviewees favored digital platforms for variety and ease, while the older interviewees appreciated the live aspect of traditional radio. The questions I asked revolved around what has replaced radio as their primary source of audio content and whether they have noticed the shift from traditional media to new online formats.
As I concluded my topic and observations, I noted that radio's past achievements have been so immense that it's still able to be relevant while evolving and being shaped by digital versions of itself.
Behind the Scenes Insights and my Experience Working on the Report
I began filming live on World Radio Day. This helped me to fully immerse myself within my topic and helped me formulate an approach that matched the significance of the day. I made use of a DSLR camera with a tripod. This helped me to shoot and present alone while, still maintaining good quality footage.
Majority of my filming took place within my community. Because my topic focused on the shift from traditional radio to online radio, I spent majority of the day engaging with online radio while also finding old analog radios around my house to better illustrate its past form. The interviews I decided to conduct varied as it needed to examine public perception of both radio's past and present.
While working on this report, I found that many people aren't consciously aware of radio's daily presence in their lives. I found this to be quite challenging when conducting interviews as many people weren't even aware that World Radio Day existed. This made me have to look harder for interviews from people who are actively aware of radio's impact, while also engaging with its online and digital formats.
One interesting moment happened when I was compiling all the footage. I realised that the interviewees actually created a contrast that captures well how radio is shifting. While many remember its past impact, many instead focus solely on future trends.
Final Thoughts
Radio's role in society remains strong, despite the shift to the online space. Radio will keep advancing as technology does the same, ensuring that it will remain a welcome voice in both the traditional and digital spaces.
